Description
The Business of Being a Community Musician reflects on …
- What it is we offer that makes for a successful business model
- Valuing ourselves and keeping our business afloat
- The real time-costs of administration
- Our marketing successes and failures
- Compliance issues.
- Our finances – the numbers that keep us alive
- What processes we use, and the ones we aspire to
- What software and online programs that help us stay accountable, communicating and counting
- Other related ways to earn income
We think it is relatively uncommon to tell others how much one earns. But we thought it important to help people be realistic about what the financial rewards can be, and how we achieve that. The easiest way to achieve that is to open our books to you. And so we have.
Note that we strongly recommend that you purchase and read The Ukestration Manual before reading The Business of Being a Community Musician. It is vital that you understand the context of the Ukestra Method and Ukestration prior to reading this manual.
You can get a glimpse of the Contents and part of the Introduction to The Business of Being a Community Musician right here.
But we are a community group rather than a business! Is this relevant to us?
The Ukestration Manual provides all the fundamentals for you or your community organisation to deliver effective and engaging ukulele group leadership and teaching programs.
But just because you have a well structured and effective teaching program, it does not mean you have a sustainable community structure. We chose to make our ‘sustainable community structure’ in the form of a ‘community business’ – our focus is community, but we also focus upon making a living from helping others make music together. For us, these two elements (community and business) are inextricably intertwined with music-making. In fact they form our ‘Three Essentials’.
If you choose a non-profit community organisation as your preferred structure, then we believe that The Business of Being a Community Musician will be relevant to making your organisation more sustainable beyond the life of your own energy.
