Leigh’s report – 26 June 2013
Had quite a good turn out on Wednesday (9 people at the 2pm session, 6 at the 5:30 session) with a few beginner classes before the 2pm Ukestra. We went through some 12 bar blues and what the numbers mean etc. and talked about how we could make some songs into performance pieces such as Purcell’s Canon. I also introduced Apache for the first time to the evening mob who seemed to pick it up quite well.
Mark is leading the afternoon and evening sessions on July 10 whilst Leigh takes a short holiday.

We had quite a low day in terms of numbers which was a bit disappointing. Went through Ghostriders because we actually hadn’t done it right back at the beginning, they picked it up quickly (obviously) so I focussed on strum patterns/accents etc.
Also went through Five Foot Two with the night group, as we’d only done it once before briefly. There are some useful teaching points in that song – keeping the 3rd finger on the A string and just sliding it back one fret for C to E7 change. Also that the B section of the song is basically the same as the A section but with 2 bars on each chord rather than 1. (Sounds technical Leigh!!!! – Mark).

Hope you’re having great week. Wednesday was a bit up and down, we had a great fun night with 8 people with lots of laughing and singing along (there are some big personalities in the night session these days that give Christine a run for her money), but only had 5 in the day session which was a bit small.
In the day we had a good run through “My Girl” and I was able to teach the idea of moving the C major pentatonic up 2 frets to make the D.
In the evening we ran through quite a big variety of songs and I printed up some new inversions of C, C7, F and G7 for the more advanced players to have a go at during the easy songs such as I’ll walk the line, sloop etc.
We also went through Georgie Girl which i got from Danielle’s group, it’s going well and everyone seems to love it.

Had a good day on Wednesday, numbers were down a bit due to some regulars being sick/away and what not. We’ve been working on “Smile” as it has a good combo of chords they know and then a few tricky ones, and Sway which has some good syncopated strum pattern. We also went through our two song medley of “Save the last dance for me” and “Blame it on the bossanova” which we’ve had a lot of fun with and keeps them on their toes.
