What is Ukestration?
Ukestration is where contemporary songs are arranged into parts for a ukulele orchestra. The very essence of a ukestra is inclusion, so the parts need to cater for a wide range of abilities.
Need a part that can be played by old arthritic fingers? Ukestrate.
Need a part that can hold the interest of a seasoned social player? Ukestrate.
But a great part of ukestration is also incorporating good vocal arrangements.
A ukestrated song not only holds the attention of a wide range of players, but also of the audience.
Version 2 – Sample Bio
Since 2009 Mark Jackson and Jane Jelbart have been building a global reputation for entertaining and educationally powerful ukulele workshops, all built upon their work at home with 200 people in 9 weekly ukestras and 2 choirs.
In 2016 they released their debut CD, as Jack n Jel, adding their unique and sensitive sound as a musical duo to their annual North American touring schedule.
Kamloops Ukulele Festival describes them as ‘having an honest look at relationships with an intimacy that is visceral. They are able to move easily from one emotion to another, projecting the intricacies of challenging personal stories to inviting us into the more humorous aspects of human behaviour. We were delighted to welcome Mark and Jane back to our festival this summer and the music was as fresh as ever. The juxtaposition of ukulele and horn enriched the narratives of their choice of songs. Just as I remembered, they were in one moment fun, funny and teasing and in the next spiritual, reflective and brutally honest”.
Jack n Jel have recently returned from their 7th annual tour to Canada and the USA, where they regularly appear at folk and ukulele festivals, including the Hawai’i Ukulele Festival. This was their 7th appearance in Hawai’i directing their nationwide ukulele orchestra ‘Ukestralia’.
This spring they are appearing at festivals stretching from Melbourne to Mackay, Deniliquin to Kangaroo Valley, and Brisbane to Gosford.
